This week, a museum has been built and open, Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum. This museum is designed by ZhuPei Studio. I have about half a year of working experience at Zhupei Studio. Pei Zhu also graduated from Beijing University of Architecture (B.Arch), and UC Berkeley (M.Arch).

This project reminds me of two other museum designs, one is the Kimbell Art Museum at Fort Worth, Texas, another one is the Long Museum in Shanghai.

All of the three design has a common point that they use a simple but powerful structure ‘prototype’ to connect the indoor and outdoor, architecture and landscape architecture, human and nature, mindscape and landscape.

In Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum, the architecture uses the ‘n’ shape arc to arrange the visitor’s circulation, control the view, and provide an excellent space for the exhibits which are outside.

Long Museum

In the Long Museum, the architecture uses the ‘T’ shape Umbrella to arrange the space arrangement, introduce light, and create a layer over layer space.

In the Kimbell Museum, the architecture uses the ‘M’ shape arc to introduce the daylight, and connect the outside landscape design.

The three types of simple structure, N shape at the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum, T shape at the Long Museum, M shape at Kimbell Museum are constructed by concrete, one of the most common material. Designers use a special design to create some intriguing space.

Not only the interior space that gives me some new ideas but also how the architecture connects with the outside landscape also is inspiring me a lot.

This week we will begin to design a park for one kind of animal. This is an interesting project and also this is my first landscape design. I can’t wait to start designing.
